Overseas Citizen of India
Full Form of OCI
What is OCI?
The Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) is a lifelong visa status granted by the Government of India to persons of Indian origin and their spouses who hold foreign citizenship. It is not a dual citizenship but provides multiple benefits, including multiple-entry, multi-purpose lifelong visa to visit India, exemption from registering with the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO) for any length of stay, and parity with Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in economic, financial, and educational fields (except the right to vote, hold constitutional offices, or acquire agricultural property). Introduced in 2005 through an amendment to the Citizenship Act, 1955, the OCI scheme was further liberalized in 2015 to merge the Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card scheme into it. OCI cards are widely used by the Indian diaspora—especially in the US, UK, Canada, and Gulf countries—for seamless travel and business in India. In government exams like UPSC or SSC, OCI is frequently asked under Indian polity and citizenship topics, particularly the distinction between OCI, PIO, and NRI status. The cardholder must keep the passport containing the OCI sticker valid to retain benefits, and recent changes allow lifelong validity with re-issuance of the OCI card once at age 20 and again at age 50.
