Outcome-Based Education
Full Form of OBE
What is OBE?
Outcome-Based Education (OBE) is an educational framework that focuses on clearly defining what students are expected to learn and achieve by the end of a course or programme, rather than on the inputs like teaching hours or curriculum content. In India, OBE has gained prominence under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises competency-based learning and measurable outcomes. It is widely implemented in higher education institutions, particularly those seeking accreditation from bodies like the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). OBE involves defining Programme Outcomes (POs), Course Outcomes (COs), and mapping assessments to ensure students acquire specific skills and knowledge. This approach is used across engineering, management, and other professional programmes. For competitive exams like GATE or university placements, understanding OBE helps students align their learning with industry expectations. By shifting the focus from rote memorisation to demonstrable skills, OBE aims to improve the quality and relevance of Indian education.
