Oxygen Administration Centre
Full Form of OAC
What is OAC?
An Oxygen Administration Centre (OAC) is a dedicated medical facility established to provide oxygen therapy to patients suffering from respiratory distress, most notably during the COVID-19 pandemic in India. These centres were set up by state governments and district health authorities to decentralize oxygen supply, reduce the burden on overcrowded hospitals, and ensure timely access to life-saving oxygen. Typically located in community health centres, stadiums, or temporary structures, an OAC is equipped with oxygen concentrators, cylinders, pulse oximeters, and trained medical staff to monitor patients. The role of OACs became critical during the second wave of COVID-19 in India, when demand for medical oxygen surged. They serve as intermediate care units between home isolation and full hospitalisation, catering to patients with moderate hypoxia. OACs are also used during other respiratory emergencies such as pneumonia or asthma exacerbations. In medical education, knowledge of OAC protocols is relevant for NEET PG, nursing, and paramedical exams, as it covers triage, oxygen delivery systems, and pandemic response strategies. The concept underscores India's public health infrastructure adaptability and the importance of decentralised emergency care.
