High Dependency Unit
Full Form of HDU
What is HDU?
A High Dependency Unit (HDU) is a specialized ward within a hospital that provides a level of care between the general ward and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). In India, HDUs are commonly found in multi-specialty and tertiary care hospitals, particularly in large cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. They are designed for patients who require close monitoring and support but are not critically ill enough to need ICU admission. Typical conditions managed in an HDU include post-surgical recovery, respiratory distress, cardiac monitoring, and sepsis management. The unit is staffed with a higher nurse-to-patient ratio than general wards and is equipped with advanced monitoring devices such as pulse oximeters, cardiac monitors, and non-invasive ventilators. In the Indian healthcare system, HDUs help optimize ICU bed usage by providing a step-down facility, reducing patient costs while ensuring safety. For medical students and nursing candidates, understanding the role of an HDU is crucial for exams like NEET PG, AIIMS, and nursing licensure. The HDU bridges the gap between critical and general care, emphasizing the importance of tiered patient management in modern hospitals.
