National Youth Award
Full Form of NYA
What is NYA?
The National Youth Award (NYA) is a prestigious recognition conferred by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, to honour outstanding contributions of young individuals in the fields of social service, community development, national integration, and youth leadership. Instituted in 1984, the award is presented annually on National Youth Day (January 12) to commemorate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. Recipients are selected through a rigorous process involving state governments and youth organisations, and are felicitated with a medal, certificate, and cash prize. The NYA plays a vital role in motivating young Indians to actively participate in nation-building activities and serves as a benchmark for excellence in voluntary service. It is widely referenced in government reports, competitive exam syllabi (e.g., UPSC, state civil services), and youth outreach programmes. The award not only recognises individual achievements but also highlights the diverse contributions of youth across rural and urban India, including areas like environmental conservation, education, health awareness, and cultural preservation. Understanding the NYA is important for aspirants of civil services and social work exams, as questions often relate to youth welfare schemes and national awards.
