National Waterways

What is NWV?

National Waterways refer to the navigable river routes and canals in India that have been officially declared as national waterways by the central government under the National Waterways Act, 2016. Before this landmark legislation, India had only five declared national waterways, but the act brought 106 additional waterways under its ambit, taking the total to 111 national waterways spread across the length and breadth of the country. These waterways are administered by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), which functions under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. National Waterway 1, running along the Ganga between Allahabad and Haldia, is the longest and most commercially significant, while waterways on the Brahmaputra and the West Coast Canal are also important for cargo movement. They play a strategic role in reducing logistics costs, easing congestion on roads and railways, and supporting regional trade. Major projects like Jal Marg Vikas and Sagarmala have boosted their development. For competitive exams such as UPSC, SSC, and banking, questions on national waterways, IWAI, and related schemes appear regularly in geography and economy sections.
