Non-Specific Vaginitis
Full Form of NSV
What is NSV?
Non-Specific Vaginitis (NSV) is a common gynecological condition caused by an imbalance in the natural vaginal microbiota, leading to an overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria, also known as bacterial vaginosis. In India, NSV is frequently diagnosed among women of reproductive age and is commonly seen in outpatient gynecology clinics and tertiary care hospitals. The condition may be asymptomatic or present with thin, greyish vaginal discharge, fishy odor, and mild irritation. It is not classified as a sexually transmitted infection, but it can increase the risk of acquiring STIs and cause complications in pregnancy such as preterm labor. Diagnosis in Indian clinical settings relies on Amsel criteria or Gram staining of vaginal fluid. In medical education, NSV is an essential topic in the MBBS obstetrics and gynecology curriculum and is regularly asked in postgraduate entrance exams like NEET PG and AIIMS PG. Understanding its pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management is critical for medical students and practitioners across India.
