National Stock Exchange
Full Form of NSE
What is NSE?
The National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE) is the country's premier stock exchange, established in 1992 and operational since 1994. Headquartered in Mumbai, it transformed the Indian capital market by introducing fully automated electronic screen-based trading, replacing the traditional open outcry system. NSE is the largest exchange in India in terms of total and average daily turnover and market capitalisation. It hosts the benchmark equity index Nifty 50, introduced in 1996, which has become India's most widely tracked barometer of equity market performance. The exchange operates various market segments including the Equity Market, Equity Derivatives, Currency Derivatives, and Debt Market. Its subsidiary, National Securities Clearing Corporation Limited (NSCCL), handles clearing and settlement, ensuring counterparty risk mitigation. NSE is regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). With over 2000 trading terminals spread across more than 1500 cities, it provides seamless trading access to investors nationwide. The exchange has also pioneered the NSE EMERGE platform for SMEs to raise capital. In India's financial ecosystem, NSE plays a crucial role in channeling household savings into productive investments, facilitating price discovery, and fostering corporate governance standards. For competitive examinations like UPSC Civil Services, banking, SSC, and RBI Grade B, knowledge of NSE and its role is frequently tested in general awareness and economics sections.
