National Stock Exchange Fifty
Full Form of NIFTY
What is NIFTY?
NIFTY is the flagship stock market index of the National Stock Exchange of India, representing the weighted average of 50 of the largest and most liquid Indian companies listed on the NSE. It was launched in 1996 with a base value of 1000 and has since become the most widely tracked barometer of the Indian equity market. NIFTY is maintained by the NSE Indices Limited and uses the free-float market capitalisation methodology, which ensures that only shares readily available for trading are considered. The index is rebalanced semi-annually to reflect changes in market dynamics and corporate performance. NIFTY is used extensively by traders, investors, and fund managers for benchmarking portfolio returns, creating index funds, and trading derivatives such as futures and options. It plays a pivotal role in India's financial ecosystem, influencing investment decisions and economic sentiment. NIFTY is often compared with the BSE Sensex, though the former covers a more diversified set of sectors. For students preparing for competitive exams like SEBI Grade A, RBI Grade B, or UPSC, understanding NIFTY is essential as it features in questions on capital markets, financial awareness, and economic indicators.
