National Research Foundation
Full Form of NRF
What is NRF?
The National Research Foundation (NRF) is a pivotal body established by the Government of India under the National Education Policy 2020 to foster a strong culture of research and development across the country. It was formally constituted through the National Research Foundation Act, 2023, with the primary objective of seeding, nurturing, and promoting high-quality research in Indian universities, colleges, and research institutions. The NRF acts as an apex body to coordinate and fund research activities across disciplines, bridging the gap between the academic world and industry needs. It emphasizes interdisciplinary research, innovation, and translation of knowledge into practical applications. The foundation has a special focus on increasing participation from state universities, private institutions, and colleges that have traditionally had limited access to research funding. NRF operates under the Department of Science and Technology and works alongside other agencies like the Science and Engineering Research Board. Its establishment marks a significant shift in India's research landscape, aiming to double the country's gross expenditure on research and development. For competitive exams such as UPSC, UGC NET, and state civil services, NRF is a crucial topic because it ties into national priorities like 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' and sustainable development goals. The NRF is also responsible for building a robust research ecosystem by supporting faculty, students, and early-career researchers through various schemes and fellowships.
