National Qualification Matrix
Full Form of NQM
What is NQM?
The National Qualification Matrix (NQM) is a structured framework designed to map and align all qualifications across school education, higher education, and vocational training in India. Introduced as part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, it enables seamless credit transfer, recognition of prior learning, and lifelong skill development. The NQM establishes a common reference point for comparing qualifications, allowing students to move flexibly between academic and vocational streams. It classifies qualifications into levels based on learning outcomes, credits, and competencies, from foundational to doctoral levels. In India, the NQM is developed by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the University Grants Commission (UGC), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). It is used by educational institutions, employers, and policymakers to foster a unified education ecosystem. For competitive exams like UPSC and NET, understanding the NQM is important as it represents a key reform in the Indian education system, aiming to enhance employability and global recognition of Indian qualifications.
