Activity Based Costing
Full Form of ABC
What is ABC?
Activity Based Costing (ABC) is a management accounting method that assigns overhead and indirect costs to specific products or services based on the activities that generate those costs. Unlike traditional costing, which allocates costs using arbitrary volume measures like direct labor hours, ABC identifies cost drivers such as machine setups, quality inspections, or order processing. This provides a more accurate view of profitability and resource consumption. In India, ABC is widely taught in commerce and management curricula, particularly for CA, CMA, CS, and MBA programs. It is used by manufacturing firms, service providers, and even government enterprises to streamline operations and reduce waste. ABC is especially relevant in cost-intensive industries like pharmaceuticals, automotive, and IT services, where understanding cost behavior is critical. The technique gained prominence in the 1980s and remains a cornerstone of strategic cost management. For Indian students, mastering ABC is essential for exams like CA Intermediate Costing and CMA exams, where direct questions appear regularly. It also helps in real-world decision-making, such as pricing, budgeting, and process improvement.
