National Quality Index
Full Form of NQI
What is NQI?
The National Quality Index (NQI) is a composite index developed by NITI Aayog to measure and rank Indian states and union territories based on the quality of life of their citizens. It evaluates performance across 12 critical pillars, including health, education, infrastructure, economic opportunity, and environmental sustainability. The index aims to shift the policy focus from mere economic growth to holistic well-being and inclusive development. NQI is used by policymakers, state governments, and researchers to identify gaps, benchmark progress, and design targeted interventions. It is released periodically as part of NITI Aayog's effort to foster competitive federalism. The index uses data from national surveys and administrative sources to provide a data-driven assessment of living conditions. For example, it tracks indicators like infant mortality, school enrollment, road connectivity, and clean fuel access. The NQI is comparable to global indices like the Human Development Index but tailored to India's socio-economic context. It is especially relevant for competitive exams like UPSC, where questions on governance, federalism, and development indices frequently appear. Understanding NQI helps students appreciate how data drives policy and accountability in India's diverse states.
