National Programme for Dairy Development
Full Form of NPD
What is NPD?
The National Programme for Dairy Development (NPD) is a centrally sponsored scheme implemented by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India. It aims to expand and modernize dairy infrastructure, enhance milk production, and ensure better price realization for dairy farmers across the country. The programme focuses on establishing and strengthening milk chilling plants, bulk milk coolers, and other processing facilities, particularly in areas with high milk production potential. NPD also supports the creation of value-added product units and promotes clean milk production practices. It is utilized in policy documents, state-level dairy development plans, and funding proposals. Students appearing for competitive exams like UPSC, IBPS-AFO, and state-level agriculture officer exams should be aware of NPD as it forms part of the animal husbandry and dairy development policies. The scheme complements initiatives like the National Dairy Plan and aligns with the government's vision of doubling farmers' income. By improving cold chain and processing capacity, NPD helps reduce post-harvest losses and connects rural producers to urban markets. It is a key instrument for sustainable growth of the dairy sector, which is vital for India's rural economy and nutritional security.
