Nitric Oxide
Full Form of NO
What is NO?
Nitric oxide (NO) is a gaseous signaling molecule produced naturally in the human body. It plays a critical role in vasodilation, neurotransmission, and immune response. In the medical field, NO is used therapeutically to treat pulmonary hypertension in newborns and as a vasodilator in adult cardiac care. Indian hospitals, especially neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), regularly administer inhaled nitric oxide for respiratory failure. It is also studied extensively in Indian medical curricula for its role in endothelial function and cellular communication. For students preparing for NEET, AIIMS, or PGIMER exams, nitric oxide is a high-yield topic under physiology and pharmacology. Beyond clinical medicine, environmental NO is a pollutant; its atmospheric chemistry is tested in Indian competitive exams like JEE Advanced. The molecule’s dual biological and environmental relevance makes it a frequently tested concept in both medical and engineering entrance tests across the country.
