National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship
Full Form of NMM
What is NMM?
The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMM) is a central sector scholarship scheme initiated by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to support students from economically weaker sections to continue their education at the secondary level. It targets students studying in Class 9 and aims to reduce dropout rates by providing financial assistance up to Class 12. The scholarship is awarded based on merit in a state-level examination and the family income criterion (below ₹3.5 lakh per annum). In India, NMM is implemented through state education departments and is widely recognized in government and aided schools. It plays a crucial role in promoting equitable access to quality education among socially and economically disadvantaged communities. The scheme is particularly relevant for students preparing for competitive exams like CTET, UPSC, and KVS recruitment as questions about government scholarships appear in general awareness sections. NMM is distinct from the National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) and is often discussed in policy documents and educational reforms. Its implementation faces challenges such as timely disbursement and awareness, but it remains a cornerstone of India's inclusive education strategy.
