What is NLU?

National Law Universities (NLUs) are premier public law schools in India established to provide specialized legal education and promote research in the field of law. The first NLU, the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), was founded in Bangalore in 1986, following the recommendations of the Bar Council of India to reform legal education. Today, there are over 25 NLUs across various states, each operating under its own state legislation but collectively forming the backbone of legal education in India. Admission to undergraduate programs (BA LLB) at NLUs is conducted through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), a national-level entrance exam. NLUs are known for their rigorous curriculum, experienced faculty, and emphasis on clinical legal education, moot courts, and internships.
