What is NLI?
The National Library of India (NLI) is the largest public library in the country by volume and collection. Located in Kolkata, West Bengal, it operates under the Ministry of Culture and functions as a repository of India's intellectual and cultural heritage. The library's origins date back to 1836 as the Calcutta Public Library; it later merged with the Imperial Library in 1903 and was renamed the National Library of India in 1948. Today, it houses over 2.2 million books, rare manuscripts, periodicals, maps, and prints in multiple languages. The NLI serves researchers, scholars, students, and the general public, offering reading rooms, digital resources, and inter-library loan services. It plays a pivotal role in preserving historical documents and supporting academic inquiry across disciplines. For competitive exams like UPSC and library science examinations, knowledge of the NLI's history and functions is often tested under Indian culture and heritage sections. The library also collaborates with institutions like INFLIBNET and DELNET to promote digital access.
