National Knowledge Grid
Full Form of NKG
What is NKG?
The National Knowledge Grid (NKG) is a flagship initiative by the Government of India under the Ministry of Education (formerly MHRD) to create a high-speed, interoperable network connecting all educational and research institutions across the country. It aims to democratize access to knowledge resources, enabling seamless sharing of digital content, virtual labs, e-journals, and collaborative research tools. The NKG leverages the existing National Knowledge Network (NKN) backbone to provide bandwidth-intensive services to universities, IITs, NITs, central and state universities, and research labs. Implemented progressively since the early 2010s, it plays a vital role in bridging the digital divide in higher education, fostering online learning platforms like SWAYAM, and supporting initiatives such as the National Digital Library. The grid is particularly relevant for students and faculty in remote areas, giving them access to world-class resources. For competitive exams like UPSC and other government tests, understanding the NKG’s role in India’s digital education strategy is essential. By integrating ICT in education, the NKG aligns with the National Education Policy 2020’s vision of inclusive and technology-driven learning.
