National Knowledge Commission

What is NKC?
The National Knowledge Commission (NKC) was a high-level advisory body constituted by the Prime Minister of India in 2005 under the chairmanship of Sam Pitroda. Its mandate was to transform India into a vibrant knowledge-based economy by recommending reforms across key sectors such as education, science & technology, intellectual property, and e-governance. The NKC served as a think tank that submitted multiple reports and recommendations to the government, focusing on expanding access to quality education, strengthening research and innovation, and bridging the digital divide. It played a pivotal role in shaping policies like the National Knowledge Network and the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan. Although the NKC was dissolved in 2009 after its term ended, its legacy continues through various initiatives. For competitive exams like UPSC, understanding the NKC's recommendations on higher education reform and lifelong learning is often tested under current affairs and governance sections.
