National Information System for Science and Technology
Full Form of NISSAT
What is NISSAT?
NISSAT (National Information System for Science and Technology) was a pioneering Indian initiative launched in 1977 under the Department of Science and Technology (DST). It aimed to create a coordinated national network for collecting, organizing, and disseminating scientific and technical information to researchers, academicians, and industry professionals across India. NISSAT functioned by establishing sectoral information centres in key fields like chemicals, leather, food processing, and electronics, and also linked with international databases to provide global access. It played a critical role in promoting library automation, developing indigenous databases like Indian Science Abstracts, and training information professionals. Although NISSAT was phased out in the early 2000s as the internet and commercial databases became dominant, its legacy persists in India's digital library initiatives and the National Knowledge Network. For competitive exams like UGC-NET Library Science or GATE, NISSAT is a landmark reference in Indian information policy and science communication. Its integrated approach significantly boosted R&D productivity by reducing duplication and accelerating knowledge transfer across institutions.
