National Index Fifty
Full Form of NIFTY50
What is NIFTY50?
NIFTY50 is the flagship stock market index of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India, representing the performance of the top 50 companies listed on the NSE based on market capitalization and liquidity. Launched in 1996, it serves as a benchmark for the Indian equity market and is widely tracked by domestic and international investors. The index covers 13 sectors including financial services, information technology, energy, and consumer goods, providing a comprehensive snapshot of the Indian economy. NIFTY50 is calculated using a free-float market capitalization methodology, which means only shares available for trading are considered. It is used by mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and derivatives traders for hedging and speculation. In India, it is often referred to simply as 'Nifty' and is closely watched by market participants during trading hours. For exams like the NISM series or CFA, understanding NIFTY50 composition and calculation is crucial. The index is rebalanced semi-annually in March and September to reflect changing market dynamics.
