National Headquarters
Full Form of NHQ
What is NHQ?
NHQ stands for National Headquarters, the central command and administrative nerve centre of a major defence or paramilitary organization. In India, the term is most prominently associated with the National Security Guard (NSG), whose NHQ is located in Manesar, Haryana. It serves as the strategic hub for policy formulation, operational planning, intelligence coordination, and resource management. The NSG NHQ oversees all counter-terrorism and hostage rescue operations across the country, acting as the highest authority within the force. Beyond the NSG, NHQ is also used by other uniformed services such as the Indian Coast Guard and certain wings of the Army for their national-level headquarters. The term is frequently encountered in official communications, defence reports, and news articles about national security commands. In examinations like UPSC CDS, NDA, or SSB interviews, candidates may be asked about the location and function of NHQ for the NSG. Understanding NHQ helps in comprehending the command structure of India’s elite forces and their role in maintaining internal security. The NHQ is distinct from area-level HQs and typically reports directly to the Ministry of Home Affairs or the Chief of Defence Staff.
