National Health Index
Full Form of NHI
What is NHI?
The National Health Index (NHI) is a comprehensive ranking system developed by NITI Aayog in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the World Bank. It measures the performance of Indian states and union territories across a wide range of health indicators, including health outcomes, governance and information, and key inputs and processes. Launched in 2017, the NHI aims to foster healthy competition among states, drive policy improvements, and track progress toward national health goals under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The index is updated periodically, with reports widely used by policymakers, researchers, and public health experts to identify gaps and best practices. For students preparing for UPSC, state civil services, and other competitive exams, the NHI is a critical topic in the health and social sector sections, often featuring in questions about inter-state disparities and government initiatives. Understanding the NHI helps aspirants grasp how data-driven governance can improve healthcare delivery and population health outcomes across India.
