What is NGG?

The National Green Corps (NGG) is a flagship environmental education program initiated by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India. Launched in 2001, it aims to create environmental awareness among school students by establishing eco-clubs across the country. Each eco-club consists of 30 to 50 enthusiastic students who participate in activities such as tree plantation, waste management, water conservation, and energy audits under the guidance of a teacher-coordinator. The NGG program operates in over 1.5 lakh schools from all states and union territories, making it one of India’s largest grassroots environmental movements. It also provides small grants for eco-club activities and organizes regional and national level events like quizzes, camps, and exhibitions. The role of NGG is crucial in inculcating ecological values from a young age and promoting sustainable behavior. It is often mentioned in the General Knowledge sections of competitive exams like UPSC, CTET, and State PCS. The NGG model has inspired similar programs like the Green Schools Programme and plays a key part in fulfilling India’s commitments under international environmental conventions.
