What is NGC?

The National Green Corps (NGC) is a flagship environmental education initiative by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India. Launched in 2001-2002, it aims to nurture environmental awareness and responsibility among school students across the country. Under the scheme, eco-clubs are established in schools, encouraging students to participate in hands-on activities such as tree planting, waste segregation, water harvesting, cleanliness drives, and biodiversity conservation. The program is implemented through State Nodal Agencies and reaches over one lakh schools, making it one of the largest school-based environmental networks in the world. NGC operates during the academic year, with activities integrated into co-curricular schedules and sometimes linked to subjects like science and geography. For students preparing for competitive exams such as CTET, UPSC Civil Services, and state public service commissions, knowledge of NGC is relevant under environmental policies and government schemes. The program also emphasizes behavior change and community outreach, fostering a generation of environmentally conscious citizens.
