Non-Formal Education
Full Form of NFE
What is NFE?
Non-Formal Education (NFE) is a structured, flexible educational approach designed for learners who cannot access or complete formal schooling. In India, NFE plays a vital role in reaching marginalized groups such as out-of-school children, working adolescents, rural women, and adults seeking literacy. It operates through community learning centers, open schools (like NIOS), and vocational training programs, often under government schemes like the Saakshar Bharat Mission and the National Education Policy 2020. NFE is used across rural and urban India, especially in states with low literacy rates, to bridge educational gaps and promote lifelong learning. It differs from formal education in its flexible timings, learner-centric methods, and focus on practical skills. For competitive exams like CTET, UGC NET Education, and state teacher eligibility tests, candidates are expected to understand NFE's objectives, implementation models, and its role in achieving universal elementary education under the Right to Education Act. NFE remains a cornerstone of India's strategy to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 of inclusive and equitable quality education.
