National Employment Yojana
Full Form of NEY
What is NEY?
National Employment Yojana (NEY) is a flagship employment generation scheme implemented by the Government of India to address unemployment and underemployment across the country. Launched under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, NEY focuses on providing wage-based employment opportunities to unskilled and semi-skilled workers, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. The scheme operates through a decentralized framework involving state governments, district authorities, and local panchayats. It aims to enhance livelihood security by guaranteeing a minimum number of workdays per household annually, aligning with the broader goals of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. NEY funds projects such as water conservation, road construction, and sanitation infrastructure, with wages disbursed directly to beneficiaries via bank accounts. The scheme is used extensively during lean agricultural seasons when rural employment demand peaks. For competitive exams like UPSC and state PCS, NEY is often compared with MGNREGA and PM-KUSUM as a case study in public policy and welfare economics. It plays a critical role in poverty alleviation and inclusive growth, though critics cite implementation challenges like delayed payments and fund leakages.
