Newborn Screening
Full Form of NBS
What is NBS?
Newborn Screening (NBS) is a public health initiative that involves testing infants shortly after birth for a range of genetic, metabolic, hormonal, and congenital disorders. In India, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has endorsed NBS programs to identify conditions such as congenital hypothyroidism, G6PD deficiency, phenylketonuria, and hearing impairments before symptoms appear. These tests typically use a few drops of blood from the baby's heel, collected on a filter paper card, and are analyzed in specialized laboratories. Early detection through NBS allows for timely intervention, preventing severe intellectual disabilities, growth delays, or even death. The program is widely implemented in government hospitals and private healthcare facilities across states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka, and is increasingly being adopted in rural areas as part of the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK). For medical students and professionals preparing for NEET PG, AIIMS, and public health exams, understanding NBS protocols, the list of target disorders, and its cost-effectiveness in the Indian healthcare system is essential. Despite challenges like infrastructure gaps and awareness deficits, NBS is steadily becoming a standard practice, reducing the burden of lifelong disabilities in the country.
