National Biogas Programme
Full Form of NBP
What is NBP?
The National Biogas Programme (NBP) is a flagship initiative of the Government of India, implemented by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). It aims to promote the installation of family‑sized biogas plants in rural areas, providing a clean and sustainable source of cooking fuel while also producing organic manure. The programme offers financial subsidies, technical guidance, and monitoring support to households, especially those with cattle or other livestock. Since its launch in the 1980s, it has evolved through phases and today covers most states, with a strong focus on reducing indoor air pollution, deforestation, and greenhouse gas emissions. The NBP is often mentioned in the context of India’s renewable energy targets and rural development schemes. For competitive exams like UPSC, State PCS, and banking exams, questions frequently appear on the programme’s objectives, implementing agency, and recent achievements. The NBP also complements other government missions such as Swachh Bharat and the National Action Plan on Climate Change. Its impact is visible in over 5 million biogas plants installed across the country, benefiting millions of rural families.
