National Solar Mission
Full Form of NSM
What is NSM?
The National Solar Mission (NSM) is a flagship initiative of the Government of India, launched in January 2010 under the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC). Its primary objective is to establish India as a global leader in solar energy by promoting the development and deployment of solar power technologies. The NSM sets ambitious targets for grid-connected and off-grid solar capacity, including the goal of achieving 100 GW of solar installed capacity by 2022 (later extended to 2030) as part of India’s renewable energy expansion. The mission is implemented through various phases, with policies that encourage domestic manufacturing, research and development, and public-private partnerships. It is used across all states and union territories, especially in solar-rich regions like Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu. The NSM is highly relevant for competitive exams like UPSC, State PCS, and energy-sector interviews, where questions often focus on its targets, phase-wise achievements, and role in India’s energy transition. The mission has catalysed a massive increase in solar installations and positioned India as a key player in global solar markets.
