National Bamboo Mission
Full Form of NBM
What is NBM?
The National Bamboo Mission (NBM) is a centrally sponsored scheme initiated by the Government of India to promote the holistic development of the bamboo sector in the country. Launched in 2006-07 and restructured in 2018-19, the mission aims to enhance the productivity of bamboo plantations, improve post-harvest management, and create efficient market linkages. It plays a pivotal role in generating employment, especially in rural and tribal areas, while contributing to environmental sustainability through carbon sequestration and soil conservation. The NBM is implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare in collaboration with state governments, and it covers activities such as clonal propagation, nursery establishment, plantation, and training for value-added products. The mission is particularly relevant for states with high bamboo potential like the Northeast, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha. For competitive exams like UPSC, IAS, and state PCS, the NBM is an important topic under agriculture and government schemes. It also aligns with the national goal of doubling farmers' income by diversifying livelihoods. The mission has a strong focus on women and tribal communities, promoting bamboo-based crafts and entrepreneurship.
