Medical Termination of Pregnancy
Full Form of MTI
What is MTI?
Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTI) refers to the deliberate ending of a pregnancy through medical or surgical procedures, governed in India by the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971. The Act was enacted to provide safe and legal abortion services, reduce maternal mortality from unsafe abortions, and protect women's reproductive rights. It allows termination up to 20 weeks of gestation with the opinion of one registered medical practitioner for specified reasons, such as risk to the mother's life or fetal abnormalities. Amendments in 2021 extended the limit to 24 weeks for certain categories of women, including survivors of rape and minors. MTI is widely used in public and private healthcare settings across India, with strict regulations to ensure safety and prevent misuse. It is a critical topic for medical students, aspirants of competitive exams like NEET PG and AIIMS, and appears in legal and public health discussions. The Act balances women's autonomy with medical ethics, and its implementation remains a key area of focus for policymakers and healthcare providers.
