Maximum Retail Price
Full Form of MRP
What is MRP?
MRP, or Maximum Retail Price, is the highest price at which a product can be sold to the consumer in India. It is mandated under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, and must be printed on all pre-packaged goods. This regulation prevents retailers from overcharging and ensures price transparency, benefiting consumers across the country. MRP includes all taxes and levies; no additional charges beyond the printed price are allowed. It is prominently displayed on items such as food products, cosmetics, medicines, and household goods. The concept is especially relevant for competitive exams like SSC, UPSC, and banking, where questions on consumer protection laws frequently appear. MRP empowers buyers to make informed decisions and provides a legal recourse if overcharged. While discounts are common below MRP, charging above it is an offence. The system has been instrumental in standardizing retail pricing in India’s vast and diverse market.
