Harmonized System of Nomenclature
Full Form of HSN
What is HSN?
The Harmonized System of Nomenclature (HSN) is a globally standardized system of names and numbers used to classify traded products. Developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO), it is employed by more than 200 countries as a uniform method for categorizing goods for customs tariffs, trade statistics, and tax purposes. In India, HSN codes were adopted under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime in 2017, replacing the earlier Central Excise Tariff Act classification. Every product imported, exported, or sold domestically is assigned a unique HSN code, typically ranging from 4 to 8 digits, which streamlines tax filing, reduces disputes, and facilitates international trade. Businesses must quote the correct HSN code on invoices and GST returns to comply with tax laws. For competitive exams like CA, CS, or CMA, understanding HSN codes is essential for indirect tax sections. The system covers over 5,000 product groups, making it a vital tool for traders, tax authorities, and economists alike.
