Minimum Qualifying Fee
Full Form of MQF
What is MQF?
MQF stands for Minimum Qualifying Fee, a term commonly used in Indian college admissions, particularly for professional courses such as engineering and medicine. It refers to the minimum amount a student must pay at the time of counselling to confirm a seat under management quota or other reserved categories in private institutions. This fee is distinct from regular tuition fees and is generally non-refundable or partially refundable, depending on the college's policies and the stage of withdrawal. The MQF system is prevalent in states like Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, where private colleges have significant autonomy in determining fee structures. It ensures fairness in the seat allocation process by preventing students from hoarding multiple seats without financial commitment. Students are required to remit the MQF within a stipulated deadline, failing which the seat is forfeited to the next eligible candidate. For example, during KCET or COMEDK counselling in Karnataka, candidates pay an MQF to lock in their provisional seat. Although MQF is not directly a syllabus topic, it appears in general awareness sections of management entrance exams and is important for students and parents navigating the complex admission landscape.
