Massive Open Online Courses
Full Form of MOOCS
What is MOOCS?
Massive Open Online Courses, commonly known as MOOCs, are free or low-cost online courses designed for unlimited participation and open access via the internet. Originating from open educational resources movement, they gained global traction in 2012, led by platforms like edX, Coursera, and Udacity. In India, MOOCs have become a cornerstone of the National Education Policy 2020, with initiatives like SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active–Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) offering courses from top Indian universities such as IITs and central universities. These courses cover diverse fields—engineering, humanities, data science, and vocational skills—allowing learners to upskill at their own pace. They are widely used by college students, working professionals, and lifelong learners seeking flexible, affordable education. For competitive exams like UGC NET or GATE, MOOCs provide supplementary preparation resources. The government integrates MOOCs into formal credit systems: students can earn up to 40% of their degree credits through SWAYAM courses. Despite challenges like low completion rates and digital divide, MOOCs democratize learning across urban and rural India, bridging gaps in access to quality instruction. Exam-relevant: many UGC NET questions now reference MOOC platforms and their impact on higher education.
