Mars Orbiter Mission
Full Form of MOM
What is MOM?
The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), also known as Mangalyaan, is India's first interplanetary space mission, launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on November 5, 2013. It was designed to orbit Mars and study its surface, atmosphere, and mineralogy using five scientific instruments. MOM made India the first country to reach Mars on its maiden attempt and the fourth space agency globally to do so. The mission entered Martian orbit on September 24, 2014, and operated far beyond its planned six-month lifespan, providing valuable data on Martian morphology, atmospheric composition, and solar wind interactions. MOM is a landmark achievement in Indian science and technology, showcasing cost-effective space exploration. The mission is often referenced in competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state-level science quizzes, where questions about its objectives, launch vehicle (PSLV-C25), and significance are common. MOM demonstrated India's capability to design, build, and execute complex interplanetary missions, inspiring a generation of scientists and engineers.
