Maternal and Infant Health
Full Form of MIH
What is MIH?
Maternal and Infant Health (MIH) refers to the comprehensive healthcare services and interventions aimed at ensuring the well-being of mothers during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, as well as the health of infants from birth through early childhood. In India, MIH is a critical component of the National Health Mission (NHM) and includes flagship programs such as Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) and Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK), which provide financial incentives and free care to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality. The concept is used extensively by healthcare providers, policymakers, and international organizations like WHO and UNICEF to design and monitor reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health (RMNCH+A) strategies. MIH is often discussed in public health literature, government reports, and during training of community health workers such as ASHAs. For students appearing in UPSC, NEET-PG, or public health exams, understanding MIH is essential as it forms the basis of India's commitments under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 3) to reduce maternal mortality ratio and neonatal mortality rate. A strong MIH framework not only saves lives but also strengthens the overall healthcare delivery system in rural and urban areas alike.
