Maternal-Fetal Medicine
Full Form of MFM
What is MFM?
Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) is a sub-specialty of obstetrics and gynaecology that focuses on the management of high-risk pregnancies and the health of both the mother and the foetus. In India, MFM specialists, also known as perinatologists, are typically based in tertiary care hospitals and academic medical centres. They handle complications such as pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, multiple gestations, preterm labour, and foetal anomalies. Advanced diagnostic tools like ultrasound, Doppler studies, and genetic testing are integral to their practice. MFM also involves counselling expectant parents about potential risks and coordinating care with neonatologists and other specialists. The field gained prominence in India over the past two decades as awareness of maternal and foetal health improved. MFM is particularly relevant in the Indian context due to high rates of anaemia, hypertension, and infant mortality. For medical students and residents, knowledge of MFM is essential for postgraduate exams like NEET PG, as well as for clinical practice. It bridges the gap between routine obstetrics and complex medical conditions, ensuring better outcomes for mothers and babies. The specialty continues to grow with research and training programs across major Indian cities.
