What is MEU?

A Mobile Eye Unit (MEU) is a specially equipped vehicle that provides primary eye care services to remote and underserved communities across India. These units are typically operated by non-profit organizations, district health authorities, or corporate social responsibility initiatives. The MEU is staffed by trained optometrists, ophthalmologists, and support staff, and carries diagnostic equipment such as slit lamps, retinoscopes, and vision charts. In India, where a significant portion of the population lacks access to regular eye check-ups, MEUs serve as a crucial bridge to prevent avoidable blindness. They travel to villages, school campuses, and industrial areas to conduct vision screenings, detect common conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and refractive errors, and distribute free spectacles or refer patients to base hospitals for surgery. The MEU model has been adopted by several state governments under the National Programme for Control of Blindness.
