What is LWP?
Leave Without Pay (LWP) is a type of leave granted to employees in Indian government services, as well as many private organizations, where the employee takes time off from work without receiving any salary or wages for that period. It is typically used for extended personal reasons such as medical emergencies, higher studies, family obligations, or other situations where paid leave options are exhausted or not applicable. LWP does not count as service for pension or seniority purposes unless specifically allowed, and it requires prior approval from the appropriate authority. In central and state government rules, LWP is governed by the Central Civil Services (Leave) Rules, 1972, or equivalent state regulations. Employees can avail LWP for a maximum continuous period, often up to 90 days in a calendar year, subject to exigencies.
