Land Use Survey
Full Form of LUS
What is LUS?
A Land Use Survey (LUS) is a systematic examination and mapping of land usage patterns across a defined geographical area. In India, the LUS is primarily conducted by state revenue departments and rural development agencies to collect granular data on how land is utilized—whether for agriculture, forestry, habitation, industry, or as barren land. This survey forms the backbone of land administration, enabling policymakers to plan for infrastructure, allocate resources, and implement schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana. The data from an LUS is integrated into the Digital India Land Records Modernization Programme (DILRMP), which aims to create a transparent, updated land registry system. LUS is also used in urban planning by municipal corporations to monitor encroachments and guide zoning regulations. Conducted periodically, the survey involves field visits, satellite imagery analysis, and community verification. It holds exam relevance for civil services aspirants as questions frequently appear on land reforms and e-governance initiatives in Indian administration.
