Library and Information Science
Full Form of LIS
What is LIS?
Library and Information Science (LIS) is a multidisciplinary academic field that applies principles of information management, organization, classification, and retrieval to libraries, archives, and digital repositories. In India, LIS has evolved significantly since its formal introduction at the University of Calcutta in 1911 and later through the pioneering work of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan. Today, LIS programs are offered at the bachelor’s (BLIS), master’s (MLIS), M.Phil, and PhD levels by universities across the country. The field covers knowledge organization, collection development, reference services, digital libraries, information systems, research methodologies, and increasingly, data science and artificial intelligence. LIS professionals work in academic, public, special, and school libraries, as well as in information centres, publishing houses, research institutions, and IT companies. The University Grants Commission (UGC) includes LIS as a subject in the National Eligibility Test (NET) for assistant professor and junior research fellowship, making it a popular career path for aspirants in education and research. LIS is also critical in digitization initiatives like the National Digital Library of India (NDLI). With the explosion of digital content, LIS graduates are now essential for managing and preserving both traditional and digital information resources, bridging the gap between users and knowledge.
