Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam
Full Form of LTT
What is LTT?
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was a separatist militant organisation that fought for an independent Tamil state in northern and eastern Sri Lanka. Founded in 1976 by Velupillai Prabhakaran, the LTTE waged a violent civil war for more than two decades. In the Indian context, the group is most notably remembered for its involvement in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, which led to India banning the organisation as a terrorist entity. The LTTE also had significant influence in Tamil Nadu, where it enjoyed political sympathy and logistical support from certain factions. The Indian government’s role shifted from initial training of LTTE cadres to directly opposing the group through the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) in the late 1980s. The LTTE was militarily defeated by the Sri Lankan government in 2009, and its remnants remain proscribed in India under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The acronym LTT is frequently encountered in history and political science textbooks, as well as in defence and security exam syllabi such as UPSC, where questions on Indian foreign policy and counter-terrorism often reference the group.
