Lymph Node Sampling
Full Form of LNS
What is LNS?
Lymph Node Sampling (LNS) is a medical diagnostic procedure wherein one or more lymph nodes are surgically removed for pathological examination. Widely used in oncology, it helps determine whether cancer cells have spread from the primary tumor to the lymphatic system. In India, LNS is a standard component of cancer staging for breast, lung, head and neck, and gynecological malignancies. The procedure is performed under local or general anesthesia, and the extracted tissue is analyzed for malignant cells. LNS is distinct from lymph node dissection, as it samples only specific nodes rather than removing all regional nodes. It is routinely conducted in major Indian hospitals like AIIMS, Tata Memorial, and other tertiary care centers. Pathology reports guide treatment decisions including surgery, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy. For medical students in India, understanding LNS is essential for oncology rotations and postgraduate exams like NEET PG and USMLE. Accurate staging using LNS improves prognosis and helps avoid unnecessary aggressive treatments. However, it carries risks such as infection or lymphedema. Its role in precision medicine continues to evolve.
