Local Management Board
Full Form of LMB
What is LMB?
A Local Management Board (LMB) is a statutory body constituted at the district or block level in certain Indian states to oversee decentralised planning and resource allocation for rural development. It functions as a coordinating platform between panchayati raj institutions, line departments, and community organisations, ensuring that local needs—such as infrastructure, health, and education—are addressed through participatory decision-making. The concept gained traction after the 73rd Constitutional Amendment, which empowered local self-governments, and LMBs were introduced in states like Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh to strengthen grassroots governance. Members typically include elected representatives of panchayat samitis, district officials, and subject experts. The board meets quarterly to review project progress, approve budgets, and monitor flagship schemes like MGNREGA and Swachh Bharat Mission. For competitive exams like UPSC and state civil services, understanding the role of LMBs is essential as they represent a key instrument of democratic decentralisation and local governance in India.
