Ladakh Green Year
Full Form of LGY
What is LGY?
Ladakh Green Year (LGY) is a flagship environmental initiative launched by the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) in 2022. It aims to combat desertification, enhance forest cover, and promote sustainable land use in the cold desert region of Ladakh, India. The program involves large-scale afforestation drives, soil conservation, and community participation to restore degraded lands and improve ecological resilience. LGY is implemented across all five districts of Ladakh, with a target to plant millions of trees, including native species such as willow, poplar, and sea buckthorn. The initiative also focuses on water harvesting, rooftop gardening, and awareness campaigns to reduce carbon footprint. In Indian governance, LGY represents a model for climate action in high-altitude fragile ecosystems. It is frequently cited in competitive exams like UPSC, state PCS, and environmental studies syllabus as an example of regional green development. By addressing land degradation and promoting livelihood through plantation, LGY contributes to India’s commitments under the Bonn Challenge and UNCCD. The programme is executed in collaboration with local NGOs, forest departments, and village councils, ensuring grassroots ownership and long-term sustainability.
