Local Government Unit
Full Form of LGU
What is LGU?
A Local Government Unit (LGU) refers to the administrative bodies at the grassroots level responsible for governing local areas in India. These units are created under the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments, which formalized the Panchayati Raj system for rural areas and urban local bodies for towns and cities. LGUs in rural India include Gram Panchayats at the village level, Panchayat Samitis at the block level, and Zila Parishads at the district level. In urban areas, LGUs comprise municipal corporations, municipalities, and nagar panchayats, depending on population size. The primary role of an LGU is to undertake local development activities such as water supply, sanitation, road construction, primary education, and healthcare. They also implement various central and state government schemes like MGNREGA and Swachh Bharat Mission. LGUs are elected by the local population and function under the supervision of state governments. The term is widely used in governance, policy documents, and civil services examinations, where understanding the structure and functions of LGUs is crucial for topics on decentralization and local self-government. For competitive exams like UPSC and state PCS, questions often focus on the constitutional status, powers, and financial resources of these units, making LGU a key concept in Indian polity.
