Local Delivery Unit
Full Form of LDU
What is LDU?
A Local Delivery Unit (LDU) is a designated operational division within the Indian postal network responsible for the last-mile delivery of mail, parcels, and Speed Post items to residential and commercial addresses in a defined geographic area. In India, LDUs function under the administrative umbrella of a larger post office or head office, and they play a critical role in ensuring timely and accurate delivery services across urban, semi-urban, and rural regions. Each LDU is staffed with postmen, delivery supervisors, and sorting assistants who manage the day-to-day dispatch and tracking of letters and packages. The concept of LDUs became especially important with the growth of e-commerce and India Post's logistics partnerships, as they facilitate efficient parcel handling and proof-of-delivery mechanisms. LDUs are used extensively in the context of India's postal reforms and digital tracking systems, such as the Integrated Mail Management System. For competitive exams like SSC, UPSC, and IBPS, knowledge of LDU helps in understanding the structure of India Post and its role in national communication and logistics infrastructure.
